Buying alcohol in Dubai is easier than you might think. Gone are the days when you had to travel to other emirates for booz. Nowadays, residents and tourists over the age of 21 can buy alcohol online or in-store with options for same-day home delivery.

Secure your personal alcohol license

You'll need to apply for a personal license before you can purchase alcohol legally in Dubai. The application process is free, uncomplicated and can be done either online at licensedxb.com, or in-store, upon presentation of a passport or an Emirates ID card.

  • African+Eastern: If you apply in-store, you'll receive a virtual license instantly. Your physical card will be available for collection shortly after. African+Eastern has around twenty stores in Dubai. For more details, visit africaneasterndxb.com.

  • Maritime and Mercantile International: Better known by the acronym MMI, this brand has 21 stores in Dubai. You'll need to wait between 2 to 3 days for your license card, but MMI will allow you to make an initial purchase immediately. Visit mmihomedelivery.ae.

Dubai International Airport (DXB)

Travellers passing through Dubai International Airport have the option to shop at Le Clos, a duty-free retailer specialising in fine wines and luxury spirits. Their services include concierge delivery upon arrival, complimentary bottle engraving, and a 'click and collect' option. Purchases can be collected either on arrival from stores in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 near the baggage claim area, or on departure from the store nearest to your departure gate.

Licensed establishments

In Dubai, alcohol is only served in licensed establishments such as hotels, bars, and restaurants. While most bars and hotels, particularly those catering to expats and tourists, have the necessary licences, this is not always the case with restaurants, even in neighbourhoods popular with tourists. If you'd like to enjoy a glass with your meal, it's best to check the drinks menu before making a reservation.
